How to backup Skype message history, contacts and configuration

Skype is the popular and growing app which offers free voice and video call (VOIP Voice over IP), instant Text facility all corners of the globe. Skype app developed by Microsoft division and integrated with Microsoft live account. So far it’s a success in the VOIP category free application. Windows Skype users are curious about the backup Skype messages history their contact and all configuration settings. I am going to explore these all detail in my further post.

Backup configuration and instant message history

Windows XP and below operating system Skype store configuration and message history in C:\Documents and Settings\your_windows_login username\Application Data\Skype\ location. In the Windows 7, windows 8 and above operating system, Skype configuration and the message are stored in C:\Users\your_windows_username\AppData\Roaming\Skype folder location. For backing up a data copy this directory and kept in safe place for example USB drive, CD, other disk drive or computer. This folder can be restored by copying it to the original location.

Note: – Skype To Go Voice messages option was taken out after October 28th 2010/. Now dialed any Skype To Go numbers directly put your claim to its corresponding contacts.

Backup Skype contact list

Ideally, there is no need to backup Skype contact list as they are not stored on your computer / PC. After Skype 5.0 and above all Skype contacts saved centrally on servers. All contacts are accessible from anywhere by logging into your Skype account. If you wish, you can still backup Skype contacts, follow the below steps.

How to backup Skype message history, contacts and configuration

  1. Sign in to Skype with your username and password.
  2. In the menu bar, click Contacts Advanced > and Backup Contacts to File
  3. Specify a destination to save the file to, and click Save.

    Hi Vasant,
    Skype make automatic backup of the contact names and messages of the users in my Windows 7 OS. I have never had time to think of making manual backup. I guess its important doing so. Thanks for this post as its reminds me of doing the NEEDED!

      This is quite beyond my reach. I am using Google Gravatar for fetching subscribers and commentator images.
      Before also I have faced the same issue with a couple of other users. I will look into this and resolve ASAP.
