Microsoft has improved hyper-v services and releases to its server operating systems. Windows server 2012 highly integrated with Hyper-V and its new improved features and new capabilities. here we describing 10 best feature of the windows server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.
1. VM Direct Connect.
For taking Remote of the running VMs (RDP) require active and reachable network connection, Windows Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V added the New VM Direct Connect features. This feature allows a direct remote desktop connection to any running VM by using VM bus. It’s also integrated into the Hyper-V management experience.
2.Faster migration with Compression.
Live Migration performance improve in Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with the help of compression of the migrated data over the network. by enabling this it create much load on CPU process which will impact other operation on the server. The second option, SMB Direct, requires network adapters that support RDMA. Microsoft’s recommended : If you have 10Gb available, use RDMA (10x improvement); otherwise, use compression (2x improvement). Compression is the default selected option.
3. Gen2 VMs
Windows 2012 R2 supports new concept and architecture on modern hardware with no emulated devices. it support new VM features such as secure boot for VMs and booting from virtual SCSI or virtual network adapters. The catch is that guest support is limited to 64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.
4. Extend replication site
Hyper-V Replica in Windows Server 2012 is currently limited to a single replication site. If you have multiple site then it’s difficult to manage. 2012 R2 and Hyper-V extend this to third site replication with the same token.
5. Replica frequency options.
Hyper-V Replica in Windows Server 2012 provides a standard replication interval of 5 minutes. it’s not supported below 5 minutes Nor you can replicate any slower number. no matter whether you want such frequent copies. Two new options has been added in the Windows Server 2012 R2, replication frequency frequent 30 seconds and not so frequent 15 minutes replication
6. Online VHDX resizing.
It is not possible to resize a virtual hard disk attached to a running VM in previous version. Windows Server 2012 R2 removes this restrictions. Also introduce VHDX format to reduce size of the virtual disk. You cannot Compress an online VHD. You can do these from System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2, Hyper-V Manager, or the windows Power Shell.
7. Cloning and Online VM exporting.
For exporting and cloning you need to stop VM in live environment, which is not requiring in Windows 2012 R2. It’s now possible to export or clone a running VM from System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 with a few steps. and also you can do the same with Windows Power Shell.
8. Storage QoS.
Windows Server 2012 R2 provide the ability to limit individual VMs to a specific level of I/O throughput. In the screenshot, you can see the two settings for minimum and maximum IOPS. The IOPS are measured by monitoring the actual disk rate to and from the attached virtual hard drives. If you have IO intensive applications, you need to enable this setting. it will ensure that a single I/O-hungry VM won’t trouble neighbor VMs or take down the entire host.
9. Shared VHDX.
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, also support failover clustering with requirement iSCSI or Fiber Channel SAN. In Windows Server 2012 R2 can be configured failover clustering using commodity storage with a shared VHDX file stored on a Cluster Shared Volume. Note:- that while the clustered VMs can be live migrated as normal, a live storage migration of the VHDX file requires one of the cluster nodes to be taken offline.
10. Dynamic Memory support for Linux.
Linux VMs. now ability to dynamically expand the amount of memory available to a running VM. This capability needed for Linux VMs where the amount of memory changes over time. Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V also introduce Windows Server backups to Linux guests.
